ADHD: Understanding and loving

Is it difficult for your child to sit quietly in one place? Is he constantly fidgeting in the chair, tapping his foot or moving something with his hands? It is difficult for him to concentrate on any occupation, he is easily distracted by any stimulus and is carried away by thoughts and conversations somewhere into the distance? Is he forgetful and constantly losing something somewhere? It is possible that the baby's syndrome of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Specialists characterize ADHD as a neurological-behavioral developmental disorder. To a child with this syndrome it is difficult to concentrate on the assigned tasks (attention deficit) and to control one's motives (hyperactivity).

Impulsive behavior often occurs when a child commits a rash act contrary to the generally accepted rules of behavior in society. Sometimes such actions can carry a danger to the life or health of the child or others. He often wedges into other people's conversations, interrupts, cannot wait his turn. And he learns badly even on his own mistakes (what can we say about the notations of parents and teachers based on the experience of others - their hyperactive child simply does not hear).

In turn, others often react to children with ADHD without properly understanding the problem, hanging on the habitual labels: a difficult child, a bully, inadequate, spoiled, ill-bred ... These are perhaps the softest epithets that society can award too active and impulsive person. In response to such reactions, the child gradually decreases self-esteem, academic performance is falling, protest behavior or depression is developing. Wanting to assert himself, an over-grown hyperactive teenager easily falls under the influence of "bad companies".

So, for adults, it is important to understand in time that we are dealing not just with bad behavior, but with the development peculiarity, with which we must skillfully and carefully work. In exceptional cases, children with ADHD are prescribed medication. But often there is enough work of experienced teachers and psychologists.

The mechanism of behavior of a child with ADHD is well described by such an example. The housewife prepares dinner, and she urgently needs to remove the lid from a boiling pot. She knows perfectly well that the lid is hot and you cannot grab her with your bare hands, but in an impulsive impulse she still does it, burning herself to the bubbles. Approximately the same happens with hyperactive children. They perfectly know the rules and norms. But when they need to apply them in practice in a complex, emotionally overloaded situation - they forget about all the rules and immediately choose the simplest and most stupid decision.

Needless to say, the common medicine in our society such as "scolding" and "giving a good belt" does not cure ADHD. In this case, it is more likely to find ways to interest the child, find outlets for his irrepressible energy, determine his strengths and weaknesses, methodically teach him to work, follow certain rules, stop and think before running, screaming and jumping. And we should smile more often at our "difficult" children and praise them: for each correctly read or written word, a collected bed, a hanged shirt in place, a minute of peace and tranquility given to you.

To find the right approach to the hyperactive child, to teach him to assiduity and concentration, to develop skills of desirable behavior with all this you will get help from the specialists in ABA therapy. You will only have to listen attentively to the recommendations of the behavioral analyst and to fulfill the rules of the game established by him, fixing the positive effect of the lessons. One way to teach a child to focus on tasks is to introduce a visual timetable that will remind the child about what needs to be done.
